Auszüg aus Semesterarbeiten

3. Auszug aus einer Arbeit zum Thema "Postkoloniale Theory" (Englisch)

Within Postcolonial Studies the term Whiteness is stated as being used as a normative concept. It is the category which is assumed to be natural, the one which other categories, like black, coloured, red, yellow etc. are seen as distinguished from. In summary one can say that white is always seen as the ideal-type regarding appearance, culture and behaviour. This assignment adopts this theoretical viewpoint concerning the so called development cooperation and states that the latter is constantly working with a normative concept of whiteness, dictating the “least developed countries” in terms of state-organisation and health-care as well as teaching the population what being a (good) citizen means.

Within this assignment the above described definition of whiteness is combined with the concept of “going-native”, a term that has originally been used to characterize the fear of the colonizer of so called native cultures and of becoming morally degenerated if being absorbed by “native customs”. In this paper both concepts, whiteness and “going-native”, are deployed to show that “development cooperation” is formed by self-images of white development workers as being the ones who already went through the progress of Aufklärung, as the superiors and the ones that are in duty to promote the good, democracy and healthy life-styles. At this point the term help is turned into an instrument to reproduce images and associations of whiteness as being the persons that do good. Where before has been the colonizers’ self-image as simply being the “superior race” and therefore being legitimated to colonize other continents, nowadays there is the development workers’ self-image of being committed and devoted to upgrading other continents on behalf of humanity. Therefore by means of “development cooperation” the complexity and subtlety of power proportion in the relationship between persons who help and persons who receive help is still the same as during the period of colonization. At this juncture Foucault’s theory of power will be adopted to support the above thesis as the ambition of this assignment is showing that the power proportion between white and non-white has only changed its appearance and got more subtle which is illustrated by shifting the term “development aid” to “development cooperation”.
